Rising Sun Farm |
| Welcome to our website! Rising Sun Farm is located in rural Geauga County in northeast Ohio. Why do we do this? We love Miniature Horses and love to share them with others. Our main love, way above showing or selling Minis, is having foals. The foaling process itself and especially the resulting foals are our biggest reason for it all. I've been addicted to horses forever and have always been involved with them one way or another since my first rocking horse. Like many others with the same addiction I've done whatever necessary to be around horses when actual ownership wasn't possible, from mucking stalls to hot walking racehorses. Along with ownership came years of riding, contesting, foxhunting, team penning, and eventing, first as a boarder and then, finally, with a farm to call home in 1989. Adding boarders and breeding to the list added to overall experience but something was still missing until I saw my first Miniature Horse and fell in love. It took a few years and the sale of my event horse to get things rolling, but we finally purchased our first three Mini mares in the fall of 1998, followed by a stallion the next spring. This year we reached nineteen temporarily, but sales have reduced our herd back down to about a fifteen for the moment. We haven't had Minis the longest, and we don't have huge numbers, but this is a full time operation and we feel our horses are happier, healthier, and friendlier because they all get handled, worked and played with every day. They're all turned out on pasture daily, including our "show" horses, and tucked into their stalls each night. Sure, its a lot more expensive that way and takes a lot more time, and sure they get dirty, their coats get a little sunbleached and their tails aren't perfect, so we've got a lot more grooming to do, but they're allowed to be real horses, happy and content, and they still hold their own at the shows (just an added bonus for us, not a requirement). We're proud of our feeding, worming and vaccination programs and prouder still that our foals are not only healthy but friendly, affectionate and well mannered due to careful breeding, management and attention. All potential owners are screened and horses go to their new homes with halter, lead, up to date vaccinations, hoof care and dental care, information sheet and care package. Advice and assistance are available before, during and after purchase to insure adequate facilities and proper care, especially for the novice horse owner. We don't sell to just anyone showing us the money, so friends teasingly call us an adoption agency rather than a sale barn. We can live with that! |
