Probably the one most important service to keep your vehicle alive

 for the longest time is to change the oil and filter every 3,000 to 3,500

 miles! Another service that is important in keeping your car dependable at

higher mileages is to have the timing belt replaced at 6 years or the

 recommended mileage ( 90,000 miles on Honda and Acura makes and

 60,000 on most other makes). Some newer makes have timing 

 chains. These also have to be replaced, but usually at 100,000 miles. 

Most of these engines self destruct if the chain breaks!

One of the best ways to avoid unpleasant surprises is to have 

 your  vehicle looked over about every 10,000 miles. That way things 

that are starting to show signs of wear can be monitored so the 

owner doesn't have an unexpected breakdown.  These always seem

to happen when we least expect them.
